A Decade of Digging | A Big Ol' Shovel Knight Retrospective
Please pretend this video released in June.
Shovel Knight is the indie game that could. Starting from an inside joke between a few Wayforward developers, it hopped onto Kickstarter and caught eyes in a time where 8-bit retro callbacks weren't seen often. Before too long, the project had gone from quirky novelty to critically acclaimed indie darling, selling millions of copies and making its way onto multiple "Best of the Year" lists. As well as a certain someone's PS Vita in the year 2014, inspiring their interest in the indie gaming scene and all the joy it has to offer for those looking. It was me... I'm the certain someone...

The Tragedy of a Game No One Cares About | Atelier Annie Review
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.4 месяца назад
In 2009, Atelier Annie: Alchemist of Sera Island was released on the DS, soon followed by an international release. Ever since, the game has been considered by fans as one of the worst entries in the franchise and not even worth playing. It has seen so much neglect by the community at large, this is the only dedicated review of the game on RUclips. Despite the common opinion I've seen of Annie,...

Atelier Iris Trilogy Retrospective

The Atelier series began in 1997 with Atelier Marie: Alchemist of Salburg, and stayed in Japan for the next 7 years. In 2005, Gust teamed up with a publisher to get their games to an international audience, starting with Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana. Followed the next year by Atelier Iris 2: Azoth of Destiny, and the year after that with Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm. These games stand in sharp ...

The game is a Cult hit to me. Rosalyn is one of my favorite characters in any rpg to this day. You captures my thoughts on the combat perfectly. It was not fun. The 9 floors of Deep Gray Pit omg. That dungeon was agonizing. The only song I remember 15-20+ years later is the song in the green field before the fishing village. It was catchy.

One of my all time favourites. It really made you feel like you were going on some grand adventure. I think the first one is a little underrated since it tends to be overshadowed by its sequel. Although the sequel did some things better this one did it first. I would be curious for a remake but with the state of the gaming industry I think it would most likely end in disappointment. For me this game is a 10/10 and I highly recommend any fan of rpgs and especially fans of jrpgs to play

Always cool to get recommended a channel that covers niche topics, so lemme contribute some engagement to help with the RUclips algorithm. I've played Atelier Resleriana and I can wholeheartedly agree with your issues with Atelier Resleriana after quitting and realizing I just wasn't having fun (despite being used to playing a lot of gacha games) due to how the whole game just feels like a lobotomized Atelier title. The main issues plaguing the game genuinely feels kinda baffling to me due to most of the problems being something I feel recent gacha games have solved (an almost universal price point for spending actual money on rolls, a better premium currency economy for people who don't spend much or at all, menus that don't have needless animations that take too much time, general ui design for phones that looks pretty, readable and most of all tells you the right details you need which the targeting system on enemies in this game doesn't have) and instead feels like it's trying to go after gacha game designs that are from the mid 2010s and it honestly feels like they've started to course correct with how they appear to be adjusting the in game economy now, but that just doesn't feel enough to fix the overall issues I think the game has considering how unfun the synthesis feels. At least it gave us the school event which was an interesting concept and makes me kinda want to see an Atelier game set in a modern day setting, and Resla is genuinely a likeable character unfortunately trapped in a gacha game. Oh wait you talking about Resleriana was just minor segment and this whole video is about Atelier Annie. Annie is very cute and tomboys are indeed very cool! But for real, this was a really nice video on Annie, and it's always cool to hear about these older titles since I don't think I'd have the time to go through them.

Funny enough, Demon Slayer collabed with the Granblue gacha. Additionally, I don't blame what you say for Lyria. She's defended herself better in the Gacha than she did for Relink given she's just kidnapped and in someone's custody for most of the story.

  • @RebeccaGunn
    @RebeccaGunn 18 дней назад

I think part of the issue is Annie is very "old skool" Atelier which - personally at least - it's taken me time to appreciate. Looking back now it has a lot of similarities with the original PS3 release of Rorona - the original release had no indicators that going to a certain part of town would trigger a special character event and Annie is also like this. People see the crafting system, the small amount of locations and I think they just throw the towel in a bit early. I remember people complaining about Anne being one of the weakest series protags as well, I actually think her being motivated by greed/laziness is pretty unique in a series full of protags with fairly noble intentions. But despite that she actually becomes quite charming and sweet. I think people just get irritated by the initial premise and the fact it's mostly menus only.

I loved this game before I even had a ps2. Our game rental place alwats had it on front of their shelves and I'd just look at the character art for mimutes while my dad scrolled cds. My now husband got it for my 16th bday for me. I don't remember Bull being too hard, but I also collected every gear and was power leveling. I just wanted to get Linda asap and Epros too (shame he's so late). I really hated the dungeon Bull was in cause I couldn't find one of the pots for hours, it was in a small room by itself. I wish there was more love, lore or anything really for this game. It's a spog to get through some times, but god I love the art so much. Hell I had one of the earliest uploads of the ending on here as a terrible nokia camera phone video back in 07(you don't gotta look for it, just been trying to get the word out since then about the game). I think they copyright struck the music lol.

Honestly, maybe Layton should have longer hair. We know from Miracle Mask that he used to, and maybe that way it would make a tiny bit more sense of how his hat is constantly stuck on his head, with the hair inside keeping the hat in place somehow. But we know from Lost Future that it's not the case.

It's been an interesting experience getting into the franchise via Resleriana. As far as gacha games, it's definitely one of the higher quality ones with a very obvious amount of love and care put into it. However so much of the series veterans reject it outright simply for being a F2P Gacha game. Everyone has their own preferences so I don't judge them for that, but it always feels like it's just a rejection of gacha games due it's negatives without bringing up the positives - namely that it's free and that, due to it being a living game, it's much easier to have live and active communities around them. Similar to MMOs, but obviously on a more casual level. Shortly after playing Resleriana I tried picking up Ryza and Ayesha, taking the advice of everyone telling me to play a "real" Atelier game...and honestly I couldn't get into them at all. I'm not sure if it's a psychological block or what, but paying full price for these JRPGs and having to run around an open world where nothing is really happening didn't really compute in my head. It just felt weird to have so much gameplay depth for such a casual, fluffy atmosphere and story. Meanwhile, I stuck with Resleriana and slowly but surely ended up falling in love. Early on I had the same issues with it - story seemed boring, lot of characters just talking about fluff, no real stakes...I was constantly fast clicking through dialogue trying to get to the next scene because I was so bored. At least it was easy enough to auto through battles and get through said story. But by the later chapters I finally...got it. Like it clicked. The stakes don't have to be big. We don't have to be the chosen heroes. It's perfectly okay to actually have fun adventuring and just chatting with our companions and having a grand ol' time crafting and doing alchemy. I still plan on getting into the "real" Atelier games, especially because Resleriana has so many events and characters from the other games that interact with each other and drop little story bits (plus includes some of the music. Atelier has some great music across it's entire franchise! I had no idea!). But I can pretty confidently say that if it wasn't for Resleriana I would have never, ever gotten into this series. I'm sure there will be cheers from the community if/when Resleriana ends of service, but I personally hope it sticks around for a while to come. I've come to really care for these characters and in a world where gacha games are very much taking over the gaming landscape, I want us to have more options then the far more predatory alternatives of Genshin Impact/Honkai Star Rail.

I was just on the final stretch of the Specter of Torment campaign when this video dropped yesterday & man, if there's one campaign I'll be glad to return to whenever I have the reason to do so, it is this one & It is an easy favorite. Bonus to finishing the campaign during the outro bit of the vid today. Both Shovel of Hope & Specter of Torment definitely clicked for me and Heck yea Dash Slash is so cool + a lot of Spider Scythe usage reminding me a bit too much of the Spinning Blade in Mega Man X3. I've somewhat kept track with the series since around like the latter end of the kickstarter and I always had the interest of doing so but better late than never to get into it after like the 3ds eshop closing sale. I do like Plague of Shadows more than I thought just from the movement madness alone & short deviations added within the existing level design that take advantage of Plague Knight's movement but at the same time, that's a learning curve that I never really got the hang of despite the touch screen handling items and others. Too unwieldly for my liking & yea, I wished there was a more vertical travel than it had while the rest of the level design not be redone to account for this differing playstyle. At this time, just leaves the King of Cards campaign left to do and never did I think I would hear the mention of Koa'ki Meiru Powerhand in a Shovel Knight retrospective. Also MELODIOUS with its Legacy of Destruction support! Overall, solid video even with the missed upload window of last month & I'm now more aware of the spinoffs within this series. I ain't crazy enough to replay Specter of Torment like 26 times like you did with Shovel of Hope though. To a good future for the series & Yacht Club Games.

    • @Pokemonlegend247

Follow-up comment after finishing King of Cards: as much as I enjoyed Joustus once I got into it more with the variations of the cards later on, I honestly dread doing them if I did have to do them (Yes I did collect all of the merit medals, the statue wasn't worth it but I'll take it). That being said, the rest of the campaign was pretty enjoyable. The shorter stages definitely made the stage gimmicks stand out to me but I do agree that it is too long for its own good & that final boss really did not need another phase right afterwards. The heal before the second phase I can leave out but that fight did drag. The added boss for taking out every Joustus Judge though with Cardia, That was absolutely worth it even though I was unprepared for both the match & the boss fight itself (Was very much reminded of Kirby's Adventure's Nightmare with the background and that's cool). I may prefer the platforming here over Shovel of Hope but not as much as Specter of Torment because of how sometimes it is tricky to handle King Knight's shoulder dash in tight platforming (the penultimate stage for example) and the Heirlooms didn't get too much use either with the exceptions of the Rat bomb (With your recommendation), Healing hammer, Scorching Saber, & Gyro Boots which I really wish I used more because that's such a fun one to control. I really did enjoy King of Cards but if Plague of Shadows was mixed, this one I'm even more mixed on because how dense it is for a final campaign in release order. It's like we went from your traditional 8-bit platformer to something along the lines of Super Mario World and then more was added on top of it. It is a lot to take in & lasting at least 13 hours in my time is nuts. I'm not replaying it any time soon but I'd be more interested in doing than Plague of Shadows. Overall, still worth the entire package despite only one dud in there out of the 4 campaigns (No comment on Showdown).
